I Just Sat & Listened
by Bryn George | April 16, 2026
I recently had coffee with a donor.
When I returned to the office, someone asked how it went. I think they were wondering whether I made an ask, moved a proposal forward, or at least secured a clear next step.
My answer was simple: “I just listened.”
The donor had been through an incredibly difficult year. Cancer. Treatments. Uncertainty.
As we sat together, it was clear that her perspective had shifted. The conversation wasn’t about philanthropy, campaign priorities, or funding opportunities. It was about her story, her experience, and everything she had been carrying.
In that moment, making an ask would have felt out of place. What she needed wasn’t a proposal. She needed someone willing to listen.
It was a powerful reminder that relationship-based fundraising isn’t always about advancing the next step.
Sometimes it’s about being present. Sometimes it’s about creating space for someone to be heard. Those moments may not show up in a moves management report, but they are often the moments that build the trust that makes everything else possible later.
Fundraising is relational. And relationships are built one conversation at a time.
